Actually an object that should belong in a design museum. In Arno Glössner’s glass etching, one could discern an era marked by profound societal upheavals and the looming threat of World War II. The artwork resonates with the imagery of Leviathan, a colossal sea monster resembling a massive fish or whale. In various mythologies, Leviathan is portrayed as one of the most formidable creatures of the sea, sometimes associated with Triton, the sea god, as its master. However, depictions and interpretations of Leviathan vary across different traditions and sources, adding layers of complexity to its symbolism.
The title of the book, “Leviathan,” by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes is drawn from the Bible, symbolizes the all-powerful and monstrous machinery of the state. Leviathan represents the sovereign power of the state, which has the right to exercise authority over citizens and maintain order. Hobbes presents a vision where individuals relinquish certain natural rights to a strong state in exchange for protection and stability.
